By default, remote root access is disabled for security reasons. However you can still enable it by configing sshd.

How can I reboot or shutdown BSD (FreeBSD) based system? (Command shutdown -h 0 is not working.)

Answer

FreeBSD or other BSD uses the shutdown or halt command to shutdown system. To reboot FreeBSD/BSD box use reboot command.

One he problem I met when trying to install FreeBSD (7.2-RC) was quite frustrating.

You created a disk (dvd or cd, whatever), tried on several machines and checked that there was no problem reading it with os installed.

When  I tried to install FreeBSD with cd-rom, it WAS saying "Boot from CD / DVD:". Two minutes later, however, it was still saying "Boot from CD / DVD:" and after a while, it was booted from the hard disk. I tried several times, no difference.

Problem description

After logged in or went to " System -> Preferences -> Appearance", you saw the system give the following error message:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.

If you want resize your photos to put them on your blog or website. As you know, you can’t upload your photos on a webpage with the highest resolution because a web gallery became inaccessible and too slow to load. Then maybe you have a folder containing every photos of you holidays and you want resize it at 768 of width maintaining original aspect ratio. To make a resize there are many tools but here I suggest a command line tool called “mogrify”. This tool will be installed with ImageMagick Libraries, so all you have to do is installing ImageMagick.
